Looks like we Trumped Red China

The news on Monday morning was dominated by stories of an economic recovery by Red China of a recession that the U.S. press had largely ignored. (Snip) John Austin of the Brookings Institute wrote in Time magazine, “Conventional wisdom that [Red[ China’s economy would eclipse the U.S. in a decade—maybe even sooner—is looking uncertain. The view that [Red] China was the emerging geopolitical power, with developing nations tucked under its wings, is looking similarly shaky. It is now unclear whether [Red] China’s GDP will ever surpass the U.S. and nations around the world are rethinking their ties to Beijing and the debt trap that is the Belt and Road Initiative.

It is difficult to grasp how may millions and millions, probably billions, of tons of concrete were used in these unfinished buildings, which will never be finished, never be lived in. And with the low rate of natural deterioration of concrete, unless these are torn down and the concrete hauled away, they will be there for centuries getting more and more decrepit and dangerous to go into. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mt-Pa5s5zZI

#6, it's interesting that the building developers were so fixated on copying Paris, Manhattan, and London down to the last detail. Seems to back up what I've always read about the dearth of creativity in China... the idea being that their educational system doesn't engender (or sometimes even permit) creativity.

Reagan basically made the USSR overspend on its .military until they collapsed. Maybe Trump can do that economicaly to China, assuming Joe Biden doesn't bankrupt us first.

#6 - Thank you for the video links. I also did a second video from the #4 link. I had seen some others on the "Ghost Cities" before, but none as detailed in their explanations of the root and consequences of the phenomenon. If China's economy is about to implode, and their puppet president of their biggest potential adversary is failing and will lose to the man who ate China's lunch last go-around, why not invade Taiwan before America's election? I agree with #7's observation about the re-creation of the great capital cities of Europe. It was rather creepy. Why would the average Chinese citizen want to live in a physical environment that was not their culture? If they wanted to live in Europe they would emigrate...if they could. Which they can't. So if they wanted to live in one of these "foreign" cities, would they not be signaling to their government they hold anti-China feelings? What a Catch-22!

Re #10, if you go to Serpentza's Youtube channel and start from three or four years ago (maybe more) he apparently started out with him and a friend, two Aussies, I think, traveling around China as tourists on motorcycles. At some point he learned to speak Chinese, and lived in the country for a number of years. He has a lot of experience with their crazy government antics. Like the rule that requires two elevator repairmen on all jobs to ensure that the maintenance is done properly, and a photo must be sent to the government office to prove there two working. So, they carry fold up cardboard cutouts of a repairman, to put a bit farther than the one real repairman, take the photo and leave....no repairs. This one about bike-sharing bikes is just mind boggling. And most of them are brand new. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwNdNL2GA3U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDfLWFv3ixk

If there is any topic that requires seriousness, it is the topic of genocide. If there is any sin so profound, any crime so vast, any wrong so awful that it must be treated with the same respect you would treat the body of a murdered child, it is this one. Because, after all, it is the crime that encompasses many such bodies. You would think these truths would give pause. You would think people would be both very quick to condemn a real genocide, and very keen to avoid applying the label where it isn’t deserved.

Today, a side of Adams that was not made much of in his lifetime has for many of us become the most important, and much-needed, part of his legacy: his critical view of Islam and of Muhammad. He derived these views from experience—his own and his father’s—of Muslim behavior (both of the Barbary Pirates and of the Ottoman Turks), from his lifelong study of history, and from his intensive reading of the Qur’an. I have a story on the website about a recent visit to Mar-a-Lago for a conversation with former President Donald Trump. At any given moment, there are lots of subjects in the news one could ask Trump about, but I decided to focus on a longer-term story — how he managed to come back from the disastrous end of his presidency in early 2021 to become the 2024 Republican Party presidential nominee. It’s really a story about the intensity gap between Trump’s supporters and everybody else. Here’s the short version of what he told me during our conversation in Florida: He never felt politically dead. He knew he could run again.

Federal judges have ruled against the Biden administration in several recent high-profile cases, and those on the Left are not happy about it. Instead of defending their policies on the merits in front of these judges, those on the Left have instead pressured the principal policy-making body for the federal judiciary to change how cases are assigned to those judges. Sadly, that body bowed to the pressure and created new guidance for assigning certain cases—all to soften the criticism coming from the Left. The first thing I notice when I watch a black-and-white TV show on one of the rerun networks is the ties. In the 1950s, every man wore a tie. The milkman wore a tie. The mailman wore a tie. The policeman wore a tie. Even Elvis wore a tie on occasion. Chuck Berry always wore a tie. Gas station attendants wore them. (Snip) Men wore ties to ballgames because men were civilized. This week all eyes were on the Willis-Wade fiasco in Fulton County, Georgia, but three less smuttily scintillating cases seem at last to be limiting the overreach of the Department of Justice respecting the J6 defendants and Jack Smith’s persecution of President Donald Trump. In interpreting criminal statutes, it seems to me that Courts should not be creative and expansively read into them things that the legislature which writes the laws did not clearly proscribe as illegal, and it appears that finally, courts higher than the highly partisan D.C. Circuit judges understand that.

A bird flu pandemic could be '100 times worse than Covid' and kill up to half of everyone it infects, experts have warned — as the White House says it is 'monitoring' the situation. Speaking at a briefing, virus researchers said the H5N1 strain of bird flu may now be getting 'dangerously close' to triggering a pandemic. Multiple cases of the infection in a variety of mammals, including cows, cats and, more recently, humans, are all raising the risk of the virus mutating to become more transmissible, they said.
