Minnesota raised its new state flag over its capitol on Saturday. The flag was unfurled on the state's "Statehood Day" holiday and features a stylized outline of the state, an eight-pointed star and a field of light blue. The unveiling is the culmination of a competition to redesign the flag and state seal to replace one that showed native peoples being driven off their land. The final design for the flag was modified from a submission by Andrew Prekker. "The new flag and seal reflect all Minnesotans and showcase the features of our state that we can all recognize – the

National Democrats are deep into the planning for the convention in Chicago to be held in August. Biden's planning team is looking wistfully at the 2020 COVID convention when most events were virtual and the chances for disruption were greatly reduced. They are looking for ways to duplicate some of those events, like the pre-recorded roll call vote where individuals representing state delegations got creative and made their video vote an advertisement for their state. One big change being considered is a move to an alternate convention site for the actual nomination. Since Biden is having trouble getting on the

WASHINGTON – Sen. Bernie Sanders, the 82-year-old self-described democratic socialist from Vermont, announced Monday that he plans to seek another term in the U.S. Senate. In a video statement posted to X, formerly Twitter, Sanders said he would be "in a strong position to provide the kind of help that Vermonters need in these difficult times," noting his high-level role in multiple committees and in the Senate's Democratic leadership. "In many ways, this 2024 election is the most consequential election in our lifetimes," he said, not directly referencing President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump but adding: "Will the United

American men are opting out of the workforce at unforeseen rates. For many, it's not an issue of not being able to find a job. They have simply opted out altogether. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found only 89 percent of working age men have a job or are actively looking for work. In 1950, that number was at 97 percent. While the early 1950s saw around 96 percent of working age American men between the ages of 25 and 54 working full or part-time jobs, that proportion has now moved to just 86 percent, according to the Bureau of

The U.S. economy added fewer jobs than expected in April while the unemployment rate rose, raising hopes that the Federal Reserve will be able to cut interest rates in the coming months. Nonfarm payrolls increased by 175,000 on the month, below the 240,000 estimate from the Dow Jones consensus, the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. The unemployment rate ticked higher to 3.9% against expectations it would hold steady at 3.8%. (Snip) The jobless rate tied for the highest level since January 2022. PORTLAND, Ore. — A public fountain in Portland’s South Park Blocks that depicts a scene from the Torah and the Old Testament and was donated to the City of Portland by Jewish Immigrant Joseph Shemanski in 1926, was vandalized in early March, city officials say. Portland Parks & Recreation spokesperson Mark Ross told KOIN 6 News that Shemanski Fountain’s stone base was chipped away and two of the fountain’s three bronze bowls were stolen. The City of Portland filed a vandalism report on March 4 after city employees noticed the damages. “PP&R maintains the fountain and Portland Water Bureau owns

Intense clashes between anti-war protesters and police on college campuses is spreading alarm among Senate Democrats who worry that anger over President Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza could engulf their party’s presidential nominating convention in late August. Images of police arresting more than 100 protesters on Columbia University’s campus, including Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-Minn.) daughter, have Democratic lawmakers bracing for chaos in Chicago. It’s just one of several campuses around the country where there have been arrests. “I think if the situation doesn’t change dramatically in Gaza, yeah, I think it could be bad,” warned one Democratic senator

Grizzly bears will be reintroduced to Washington state’s North Cascades mountain range, the federal government said this week — a decision that followed years of bitterly divided debate. But it may still be years before the creatures step foot in the remote and rugged landscape, given that the complicated process requires trapping, trucking and moving bears by helicopter from British Columbia or northwestern Montana. “There’s a lot to be done before we could even come up with a timeline,” said Jason Ransom, a wildlife biologist at North Cascades National Park. “For a project like this to be successful, it’s really

WASHINGTON -- President Joe Biden is set to deliver an election-year roast Saturday night before a large crowd of journalists, celebrities and politicians against the backdrop of growing protests over his handling of the Israel-Hamas war. In previous years, Biden, like most of his predecessors, has used the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner to needle media coverage of his administration and jab at political rivals, notably Republican rival Donald Trump. But with protesters pledging to gather outside the dinner site, any effort by Biden to make light of Washington’s foibles and the pitfalls of the presidential campaign will have

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said Thursday that President Biden was "obsessed" with lowering gas prices, when pressed on how the president plans to address the rising cost of fuel. Co-host of "The View" Alyssa Farah Griffin asked Granholm about gas prices, which she said were on the rise again. "What is the administration doing to lower those prices, and should we be worried about the conflict the Middle East contributing?" she asked. Granholm argued that the price of oil was determined by the global market, and cited Russia's invasion of Ukraine as an example of a situation that might cause
