I miss my friends. We lost one another somewhere along the way, through the pandemic and politics of the last few years, old boys who had known one another since Little League and caught boatloads of walleyes together on Storm Lake in Iowa. (snip) I know where I live. Northwest Iowa is a frozen slice of Texas, one of the most conservative places in the country. I guess I am what you call woke because I don't think immigrants are the problem; I think income — lack of it — is the problem.

When Gabrielle Robertson rented a room at a house near the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, she says her only alternative was the street.
“It was literally, I didn’t have any other option,” Robertson said.
She says she found the rental on the popular website Craigslist for under $500 a month.
Robertson later discovered that her live-in landlord, Mohammed Shahidullah, was convicted of operating without a rental license in 2022 after 5 INVESTIGATES exposed a history of health and safety violations at the property on Erie Street.

An annual “art sled rally” in Minneapolis’ Powderhorn Park Saturday featured a replica of a burning Third Precinct police station, which was destroyed by rioters during the 2020 George Floyd riots.
Video shows a crowd of residents, including children, cheering as the sled makes its way down the side of a hill. Inside was a driver dressed as a pig. The display was praised by a teacher at Patrick Henry High School. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said he was “outraged” and “frustrated” by the “disgusting display,” according to an internal email obtained by Crime Watch Minneapolis.

“This is a great evening, and it’s for a great person,” declared Mike Hally, a former Cretin-Derham Hall student. “It’s a wonderful thing.”
On Saturday night at a Target Field restaurant, Twins baseball legend Joe Mauer gave his friend Mike Hally a special Emmy award. (snip) Back in the day at Cretin-Derham Hall, Mauer was an athletic superstar.
Hally — who is blind — was new to the school, arriving in his junior year.

South Africa says more than 50 countries have expressed support for its case at the United Nations’ top court accusing Israel of genocide against Palestinians in the war in Gaza.
Others, including the United States, have strongly rejected South Africa’s allegation that Israel is violating the U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Many more have remained silent.

The Minneapolis City Council took a closer look at publishing the new meeting calendar on Monday, following a mix-up last year that sparked controversy.
Last year, the day of Eid al-Fitr, or “Eid,” the council was voting on rent control, which was a highly debated issue.
Three Muslim members were not able to vote because they were observing the holiday. This allowed the remaining council members to vote “no” to continuing conversations about rent control.

Members of the Minneapolis City Council will be meeting Monday morning to discuss and also vote on a resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza after a weekend of demonstrations in the city.
The Free Palestine Coalition ended a week of planned protests and calling for a ceasefire during a Sunday event, when they marched from the federal building to senator Amy Klobuchar’s Office.
However, as councilors meet, there seems to be a divide between some of them and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

In a letter from Dec. 19, every Democrat from Minnesota’s congressional delegation asked the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to prioritize aid to Somalia.
Citing recent flooding and torrential rains in Somalia, the Democrats asked USAID to “keep aid to Somalia at the forefront of your operations.”
