Eclipse Likely a Dud Across Most of U.S.
Path; Spectacular in Spots

Hundreds of thousands of people who have traveled to see Monday’s total solar eclipse across the southern and northeastern United States are likely to be disappointed, as cloud cover and bad weather cover much of the path. A total solar eclipse is a rare event in which the moon passes directly in front of the sun, casting a dark shadow that lasts a few minutes at any given point, depending on variables such as the distance of the moon from the earth. The experience is spectacular. During totality, the outer portion of the sun — the corona — is visible, as are stars near the sun, and planets such as Mercury,

Whatever will we do with all these magic sunglasses? Oh well. I'm having a fish fry this evening. Ya'll come.

I'm in south central PA; it started out sunny this morning but it's getting cloudy. We're supposed to see about 92% coverage by 3:20 PM; eclipse to start around 2:00 PM but 70% cloud cover by 3:00.

We had planned to drive about five hours SE of here to see totality in a rural area, intentionally avoiding cities. But, last night the predictions were for at least 60% cloud cover down there, and perhaps 95% cloud cover, so we are staying in KC area and will see a partial, but about 95% eclipse. We drove all day to Wyoming, a day early, for the last one, got great views, and I got some spectacular photos. We'll take this one a bit more casually. A friend and his wife went to Austin to see it.....predictions are for Austin to be 98% cloud cover.

I'm in NE FL. We're expecting 64% eclipse coverage with whispy clouds so we should have a pretty good view of everything. I ordered my glasses off of Amazon since in 2017, I could not find them ANYWHERE!! We are pretty much set to go.

I'm just outside toledo...clear shies this morning but high haze now...apparently news reports that we would have clear shies triggered a tsunami...city population is set to DOUBLE today, if not more, they say as many as 500,000. Warmest day yet this year, I'm mowing lawns, mine, several of my neighbors. Lit the brushpile this morning, it's down to coals. Methinks I'll get a prime ribeye out and start it thawing.

Saw a total eclipse about 70 some years ago, in Central Minnesota. My dad smoked some small panes of glass and mom and dad and my 4 siblings drove down by the river in Hutchinson, sat on the hood of dads Oldsmobile and watched the whole thing. It was an experience, but not something I'd drive any great distance to do over. Call me jaded, but I've experienced over 80 years of life, and many were more meaning to me!

Rochester, NY prepped for this for four years. A lot of disappointed people, but it was still awesome, even with clouds so thick you could not find the sun. We knew where it should have been, but just variations of white and gray. At the correct time, 3 to 3:20, it turned into an odd twilight and then full on 3 in the morning dark. It was very quiet and it did get colder. It would have been nice to use the glasses and see the corona, but still a very different and cool experience. I love extreme weather and this is up there as a long term memory, even though the sun and moon weren't visible at all.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Tuesday that combats retail theft and porch piracy, while attacking “leftist jurisdictions” such as California and New York for failing to implement policies that address these crimes. “Many leftist jurisdictions are enacting policies that ignore retail theft or even encourage it. Those policies are dead on arrival in Florida. We catch criminals and prosecute them,” DeSantis posted on X. The legislation, set to take effect July 1, will impose stricter penalties for people who steal retail items, swipe packages off porches, and use social media to incite looting. These offenses will mostly be punishable as felonies.

Latino support for President Joe Biden shrunk over his tenure by 12 points, while former President Donald Trump surged among Latinos by three points during the same period, an Axios/Ipsos poll found. The survey is a warning sign for Biden, who failed to tamp down rising costs amid soaring inflation. It also confirms previous New York Times/Siena College polling. The Ipsos poll found the following among Latinos: Trump gained 29 points on Biden since he assumed office in 2021 (53-24). Biden only holds a three point lead among those who say they intend to vote this November. Trump holds a 22-point lead over Biden on who can handle

PHOENIX — The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban still on the books in the state is enforceable, a bombshell decision that adds the state to the growing lists of places where abortion care is effectively banned. The ruling allows an 1864 law in Arizona to stand that made abortion a felony punishable by two to five years in prison for anyone who performs one or helps a woman obtain one. The law — which was codified in 1901, and again in 1913 — includes an exception to save the woman’s life. That Civil War-era law — enacted a half-century before Arizona even gained statehood

A Washington judge ruled the state's high-capacity magazine ban unconstitutional on Monday, but the law will remain in place for now after an emergency order from the state Supreme Court. Cowlitz County Superior Court Judge Gary Bashor ruled Washington lawmakers' 2022 ban on sales of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds violates both the state and U.S. constitutions, the Seattle Times reported. "There was no appetite to limit gun rights by the Founders. Though the specific technology available today may not have been envisioned, the Founders expected technological advancements," Bashor wrote. "The result is few, if any, historical analogue laws by which a state can justify a modern firearms regulation."

Mark Judge, a conservative culture writer, found himself one of the secondary targets of the efforts to destroy Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court, and has been trying to tell his story ever since. He wrote a detailed, forceful, and even entertaining condemnation of the media and political circus in The Devil’s Triangle: Mark Judge vs the New American Stasi.

There has been, for at least a year, speculation that Joe Biden was going to bow out or be forced out. What's more, there have even been calls from within his own party for him to step aside and let younger, fresher leadership step in. But Biden is stubborn and won't let anyone push him out of the way. However, there are a lot of signs that the American public does not feel confident in his job as president, and there is a lot of grumbling that has turned into polling data showing a plurality of Americans would prefer going back to Donald Trump rather than keep Biden around.

"G*d d*mn America!" was the first and only serious crisis of Barack Obama's ascension to the Democrats' presidential nomination in 2008. Obama's longtime pastor, Jeremiah Wright of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ, said those words repeatedly in an infamous videotaped sermon. In an earlier age, a presidential contender sitting still and keeping his mouth shut during years of sermons like Wright's would have torpedoed Obama's presidential ambitions. Anyone from the early GenX cohort and older thought there was a non-zero chance Obama might be toast. Anyone younger — largely denied the Civics classes prior generations were raised on and spoonfed "America is bad, mmkay?" lessons — knew better.
